Last week, “The Decider” asked you to choose between two superheroes, Superman and Batman. The balloting simply couldn’t have been much closer, with voters casting their fate with The Man of Steel. The final vote was 602-600.
So never again say “What does my one vote matter?” It matters a great deal here at “The Decider” headquarters.
This week, let’s have a little variation on the superhero theme and decide between supergroups: Rolling Stones vs. Led Zeppelin.
Obvious question: What about the Beatles? Well in my opinion, there really is no debate about that. The Beatles have ascended to the summit. They are the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Muhammad Ali of supergroups. They are No. 1, so let’s move on.
With that in mind, I thought this would be a tough decision. But I surprised myself by easily choosing: Led Zeppelin.
Maybe it’s because I was at the perfect age of 12 — moving away from the Top 40 and toward the heavy-metal — when they released “Led Zeppelin I” in 1969, followed quickly that year by the seminal “Led Zeppelin II.” The Zep (along with Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper) represented my music and, more important, the music my parents hated. It also planted the first seeds for my appreciation for the blues.
And let’s face it, I couldn’t go through life never again hearing “Rock and Roll,” “Whole Lotta Love” or “When the Levee Breaks.” So strap on those air guitars and rock the vote.
